SML focuses on 3 key safety questions designed to help identify risks that could lead to serious injuries or fatalities. This application implements life-saving permit controls and builds the capacity to fail safely.
A Save My Life permit is an official safety document that allows Georgia Pacific facility workers to perform specific tasks or activities that could be hazardous or cause a fatality. Permits are part of safety management designed to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.

We began the discovery process, acquiring knowledge of the current SML application. Then, an initial audit was performed to uncover opportunities for improvement based on UX best practices.

After discovery, we presented a document with core issues, including:
Reducing cognitive load
Ensure ADA compliance and inclusivity for users
Improving overall usability for end-users




Proof Of Concept (POC
We began to refine the wireframes and transitioned to mid-fidelity screen mockups to gain POC approval.


Once the overall design concepts were approved by stakeholders the team worked alongside stakeholders to design a presentation deck discussing the POC in order to gain budgetary and project signoff

Design Process
After obtaining full greenlight for the project, the team dedicated the subsequent months to an iterative design process. We continued to visit the GP Facility across the US to gain insights, understand pain points, and create opportunities.
We progressed in developing Hi-Fi mockups and finalizing the complete design system. Once the stakeholders approved, we collaborated with the development team for the hand-off and provided annotations.




Roadmap
AI Integration
As the product progresses, the SML team has chosen to incorporate AI to assist safety technicians in identifying hazardous work categories for permit issuance.
To implement AI, users would take a picture of the worksite and select the relevant hazardous work categories. The AI would provide its recommendations and point out any discrepancies.






Status and thoughts
After extensive QA and UAT testing, this product was successfully deployed across all Georgia-Pacific regions in the United States. Strong user adoption and positive user experience have driven increased utilization, significantly helping improve compliance, enhance safety processes, and most importantly, contribute to saving lives.
The robust feedback from users has played a crucial role in further refining this product, ensuring that it meets the diverse needs of all stakeholders involved. Additionally, the implementation was accompanied by comprehensive training sessions designed to empower employees with the knowledge and tools necessary for effective usage, creating an environment of safety and productivity.
